What is the Whole Blood Program?

When someone is experiencing severe blood loss, getting the right care to them quickly can make a critical difference. That’s why Mountain View Fire Rescue has launched a pre-hospital whole blood transfusion program. For patients experiencing hemorrhagic shock who meet the criteria, our specially trained MVFR Medical Officer can bring whole blood directly to the scene and begin treatment before the patient reaches the hospital. Whole blood provides red blood cells, plasma, platelets and important clotting factors, all in a single product. In a situation where someone is losing blood quickly, getting that treatment started sooner matters.

This program is also a great example of what can happen when agencies work together. MVFR developed the program in partnership with Intermountain Health's Good Samaritan Hospital, Louisville Fire, and Lafayette Fire. We are creating a shared resource that can serve all these communities and provide mutual aid to others when requested. MVFR crews train for these moments because behind every call is a person who needs help. Every minute matters. And sometimes, getting blood to the patient sooner can make all the difference
