Ambulance Now Stationed in Town of Mead

Posted on: Saturday, May 1, 2021

Starting today, May 1st, 2021, MVFR will have an ambulance stationed out of Station 3, located at 441 3rd Street, Mead CO 80542. Previously the ambulance was housed out of Station 1, located at 10939 Weld County Road 5, Longmont, CO 80504. This move comes after researching response times and call loads placed on other area ambulances.

We analyzed data from over 4500 ambulance responses in the north part of the district. We use the drive times from our stations 1, 3, 4, and 7 to calculate the total time to respond to all those incidents from the nearest station in time.

The total time differences for all the calls in the data set between station 1 and station 3 were not terribly significant, slightly better for positioning the ambulance at station 3. Just considering the calls that the ambulance ran from Station 1 versus if that ambulance was at Station 3, the difference was more profound. The Station 3 90th percentile times were reduced by 1 minute 15 seconds.

The load balancing was much better. The ambulance at Station 1 ran twice as many calls as the ambulance at Station 4 and 66% more than the ambulance at Station 7. This will be more equally distributed when the ambulance moves to Station 3.

Finally, with all the new housing construction going on in the Mead area, we foresee the demand growing further north. There are a number of large subdivisions that are under construction, platted, or planned in the next few years. We anticipate Mead's population to double in the next few years. Additionally, the traffic counts on Interstate 25 and Highway 66 are expected to increase.

The anticipated move required some building modifications, installation of some new IT equipment, staffing adjustments, and coordinating with Weld County and Boulder County dispatch centers to make this a successful move.
