Title: Community Outreach Assistant

 

FLSA Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt

Supervisor: Community Outreach Coordinator

 

Approved By: Fire Chief, Human Resources

 

 

Summary

The following job description is established by the District Fire Chief of the Mountain View Fire Protection District to outline the basic duties and responsibilities of the above captioned position. This position is not exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Under specified supervision, coordinates administrative support functions and participates in projects and assignments.

 

Essential Functions

 

·         Represents the District at variety of community events, school functions and District programs.

·         Coordinates and prepares materials, supplies and other resources for community events and other activities.

·         Delivers and presents education and outreach curriculum for Community Outreach programs; leads classes, seminars, presentations, and workshops; performs set up and tear down as necessary.

·         Performs customer service for the Community Outreach Program. Answers questions from the public on fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and District programs.

·         Operates Sparky at community events, block parties and parades.

·         Assists with fire station tours for education, and support crews in the event of a call.

·         Teaches CPR/First Aid Training to District staff, communities, and citizens.

·         Participates in the District’s Carseat Program.

·         Demonstrates behavior that sets a positive example for personal accountability, integrity, and professionalism.

·         Drives motor vehicles safely and lawfully.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience

 

·         High School diploma or equivalent. Associates or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, highly desirable.

·         Previous fire or emergency related experience preferred, but not required.

 

 

Knowledge of

 

·         The District mission, vision and values.

·         Policies, procedures, and goals of the Mountain View Fire Protection District.

 

Skill in 

·         The safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.

 

Ability to

·         Perform varied administrative support tasks.

·         Work evenings and weekends and a minimum of 2 events per month.

·         Respond with tact, composure and courtesy when dealing with difficult situations.

·         Perform a variety of community education activities.

·         Perform the duties and maintain appropriate personal conduct, attitude, and appearance.

·         Wear the uniform provided that is neat, pressed, clean and appropriate to the task.

·         Listen well and communicate effectively with various audiences.

·         Complete tasks in an appropriate time frame with a minimum amount of supervision.

·         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the District Board, other agencies, vendors, the business community, the media, and the public.

·         Use standard office equipment, personal computer and job-related computer applications including electronic mail.

 

Licensing/Certifications

 

Possess and maintain the following:

·         Valid Driver’s License

·         CPR certification

·         BLS Instructor certificate within 6 months from hire

·         National Child Passenger Safety certification preferred

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, reach, talk, hear, see, and demonstrate manual dexterity. Work involves lifting (30 lbs. and over) and carrying, sitting, standing, walking, pulling, pushing, crawling, bending, kneeling, and climbing to widely varying degrees depending on circumstances. Must be able to work under pressure/stress in emergency and non- emergency situations.
